Are you thinking of designing your own garden decking? If so, then our handy post this week should be really helpful. We're going to be giving you some top tips on designing garden decking, so read on and find out how you can plan for a successful time spent outside in the garden this year!
Take a look online for free deck plans
Firstly, take a look online and you'll find there are plenty of free decking plans from which you can glean some ideas. Once you have a good idea of what you want, it's important to take a look at the size of your garden and your home to see how realistic your plans are.
Think about the way you live, you and your family. Accommodate your garden decking ideas so they fit in with how you like to live and entertain, whether it's endless parties, entertaining, or preparing food for guests.
Plan your garden decking out carefully
You'll need to make sure your garden is planned carefully around your decking so it fits in well with your plans. You don't want to aim for streamlined and only get cluttered in return for your efforts. Plan your garden decking well, make sure you have enough room for everything you want, including furniture, and room for people to sit.
Choose a natural look for your decking that needs occasional maintenance, or choose something that won't. You can have composite wood, PVC and similar materials that don't require any maintenance.
Cooking on your decking?
If you're going to be doing a lot of cooking on your garden decking, then make sure you have all the right appliances and equipment so the cooking is a pleasure rather than a chore. You may want to make the area a simple preparation area rather than a sophisticated outdoor kitchen, and if you do, then that's fine. Just create a small area, like an alcove, where you can get everything ready but still be able to talk and entertain.
Check out the views – but plan your decking well first
Have you considered the views? If you have a massive fence directly in front, or a brick wall, there's a good chance that where you've decided to put your garden fencing isn't such a great idea after all. Think of where your garden decking is going to go and whether you'll have great views. It could spoil your enjoyment of your new decking, and also have a detrimental impact on the value of the property should you decide to sell. Well fitted garden decking and some wonderful views make for a great selling point.
All the little details – railings and skirting
Think of all the other things that go towards making some great garden decking. The skirting and railing are just as important so that all the elements of your garden decking come together. You want a great visual impact, so think about how you're going to design it from top to bottom. There are some great designs when it comes to components and railing designs, so don't leave these details out.
Sun, seating and plants
What about seating arrangements, plants and overheads? You'll need some shade from the sun, so think about a pergola perhaps, or an awning for when the sun is at its hottest. A few planters are a great idea too, along with some large pots, they could be part of the railing offering shelter from the sun, giving you some much needed privacy.
